I want to start the first post of the year by sharing some thoughts inspired by a beautiful conversation that I had on New Year’s Day with one of my OPs (Olivia Pope) where we talked about the goals we are setting, actions we will be taking and energy that we are feeling for 2017. During the conversation she recommended two books that I’ve heard about and have since ordered and can’t wait to read. The books are The Secret and Law of Attraction, The Secret Behind The Secret. First let me say that I am a Christian and I do believe in a power greater than me, God. I also believe in the power that people have to bring positivity into their lives and other’s lives by using their God given energy. I have always chosen to be an optimist and often times I had to work at choosing optimism. I also don’t shy away from challenges or hard work and I believe that having that mindset has made a tremendous difference in my ability to accomplish the things that I have set out to accomplish.
Several years ago I started to become conscious of my own energy and how I was attracting certain people and opportunities into my life…things like being promoted to Vice President, relocating to London and even my latest job opportunity. I can recall the energy and mind-set that I had during those times and the ways in which those opportunities came into my life were as a direct result of a positive mind-set, even after set-backs. Things that were extremely difficult, even to those closest to me looked relatively easy because I kept a positive attitude that whatever the situation was it would work out in my favor. When setbacks happened, yes I was sad, disappointed and frustrated but I always knew that they were protecting me from something that I couldn’t see and preparing me for something better, that’s faith.
It has been said that you are the average of the top five people that you spend the most time with and I firmly believe that it is due to energy. I remember learning in high school physics that energy can be neither created nor destroyed but it can be transferred and converted into other forms. I believe the same thing is true about people, you absorb and transfer energy to the people that you spend the most time around. It’s only natural to be happy in the company of happy people, depressed in the company of depressed people, ambitious in the company of ambitious people, and so on.
It is important to choose the energy around you carefully and always protect your energy. Don’t get sucked into the negative energy of others. When I think back to times in my life when I was the most unhappy and unproductive and I think about the people that I was closest too, they were also unhappy and unproductive. It is highly unlikely that an unhappy and unmotivated person can inspire you to find happiness and motivation.
Think about the top five people that you spend time with and ask yourself, what type of energy do they have? Do you exhibit the same attitude and behaviors? Are they optimistic, ambitious, creative and positive? Or are they pessimistic, depressed, defeated, closed-minded and negative? If you are traveling a direction in your life that you are not happy with then maybe it’s time to change your energy and/or your starting line up.
P.S. I will share my thoughts about the books in a future post.
